My bet is that they are too smart to get sucked into this bottomless hole. SUNW knows how to make money from hardware boxes, but IMO Microsoft will never figure it out. And Microsoft vs. Sony: I know who's consumer device I'd buy. Microsoft have a lot of work to do to ever come close to the warm-and-fuzzy feelings I have about Sony as a consumer electronics vendor. (Note however that I don't have a lot of time for Sony's PC-s, they have caused me a lot of trouble).

In August, one Microsoft executive, who requested
anonymity, said X-Box may be killed because of the
"opportunity to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in the
hardware business." Still, Microsoft has continued to pursue
the project.

jc, fyi: m$sft is the only company able to afford to do BASIC research of any size in this country, ala Xerox PARC. That is, FORWARD thinking research that you don't need a rapid financial return on. IBM does a little, Xerox still does some, HP does some, but Bill's kids do a LOT.

You don't hear about it; but I expect you will in the years ahead.

PS: the monopoly is in NO danger.
