ETSI-WOOF! 3G is key to renewed GSM Association & ETSI agreement Sophia Antipolis, 26 October 1999 The GSM Association and ETSI - the European Telecommunications Standards Institute – have announced the renewal of their Co-operation Agreement, reinforcing a joint commitment to continue evolution of the world's leading wireless standard as it heads toward Third Generation (3G) systems and services of the future. "This demonstrates our joint commitment to push forward the boundaries of GSM for industry and for customers," states Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association. "Together we are committed to the ongoing improvement and evolution of the GSM standard, both in terms of its present and future applications. Both organisations recognise the need to collaborate closely to ensure the smooth transition of 2nd Generation GSM to 3G." The GSM Association represents the interests of 384 GSM, Satellite and 3G network operators, regulators, administrations and GSM manufacturers/suppliers from more than 141 countries of the world. ETSI is the recognised European Standardisation Organisation for telecommunications, and defines technology standards for Europe and other continents and brings together 700 members from 50 countries. "We are delighted by the focus of the new agreement," said Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, Director General of ETSI. "ETSI and the GSM Association are strengthening the existing relationship – extending the spirit of our original agreement - with a re-invigorated approach to co-operation, promotion and development of GSM both now and in the future. I am pleased to say that we achieved this with a closer complementary approach to the standardisation process." "ETSI and the GSM Association both have key common objectives in so many areas," says Conway. "This is especially true in evolving existing 2G standards, and the development of standards for next generation wireless technology." A key part of the agreement is that the GSM Association will contribute full time staff to the ETSI Mobile Competence Centre (MCC). Both bodies will also encourage their members and Associate Members to support technology development of 2 and 3G systems and services. Co-operation with ETSI has already brought about significant benefits for the GSM community during the last few years. Milestones include ETSI's creation of an Associate Membership category for all non-European members of the GSM Association, providing access to key on-line documentation relating to standardisation. The new alliance now gives GSM members worldwide who subscribe to the ETSI Documentation Service, access to all TC/SMG and EP/UMTS documentation. "At the heart of our Co-operation Agreement is the desire to create a framework for the regular exchange of information on areas of mutual interest, with 2G and 3G evolution at the heart," says Conway. According to Karl Heinz Rosenbrock: "We aim to achieve this by providing access to working documentation on 2G and 3G easily available to both parties. Both also commit to attendance and active participation on projects, working groups and discussions related to standards. Our work together is key to creating access to the wireless internet." "ETSI and the GSM Association have reaffirmed their commitment to work together to improve and evolve GSM and its present and future applications", says Michael Stocks, GSM Association Chairman "This is good for the customer, for our members and for the global communications industry. - ENDS – NOTE TO EDITORS ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a non-profit making organization whose mission is to produce the telecommunications standards that will be used for decades to come throughout Europe and beyond. Based in Sophia Antipolis (France), ETSI unites nearly 700 members from 50 countries inside and outside Europe, and represents administrations, network operators, manufacturers, service providers, technical bodies and users. The Institute's work programme is determined by its members, who are also responsible for approving its deliverables. As a result, ETSI's activities are maintained in close alignment with the market needs expressed by its members. ETSI plays a major role in developing a wide range of standards and other technical documentation as Europe's contribution to world-wide standardization in telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology. ETSI's prime objective is to support global harmonization by providing a forum in which all the key players can contribute actively. ETSI is officially recognized by the European Commission and the EFTA secretariat. The GSM Association represents the world's GSM, Satellite and 3G network operators, regulators and, through Associate Membership, the key manufacturers and suppliers of the GSM industry. Currently there are 399 members from 142 countries and areas of the world. GSM is the world's leading mobile communications standard, with network operators providing GSM services to more than 215 million customers currently - a figure equal to 65percent of the world's digital wireless market and 51 percent world's total wireless communications market.
