The problem with your argument is that you are talking about value as determined by a free market and in the same breath you are talking about some cosmic or physical value. In the modern financial world where the markets are ruled by esoteric derivatives,where nobody really knows how many forward contracts exist...it is more Chaotic Theory than anything. I choose to invest in the one thing that stands still when everything else is flying around. That is value because as you say it is "actionless". As Henry Miller once wrote (I paraphrase) "When you are unsure of what road to take...or where to turn...stand still like the hummingbird"
