I understand what you are saying about the kinds of tradeoffs MSFT is making. But the market decides what tradeoffs are important. My main problem is tagging those tradeoffs as good bad or better. MSFT has a market and a user base that they are accountable to. They also have empoyees with families that depend on it's business doing well. If the tradeoffs materially affect the user base they will opt for another choice. Linux has a long way to go to be a real alternative as a desktop OS. I needed to install a second NIC card and it would never recognize it. I read newsgoups, online documentation, man files. None of which addressed the problem. Right now there are several other, more experienced engineers, trying to setup a proxy server and a firewall on that machine. It is slow going. The NT box is already up and running.
