Consider this

Since Peter VC was hired on in 1996 do you think that the options he received were tied to the performance of QNTM stock and not DSS alone?

In that case he may have grown tired of dragging the money losing HDD division along with DLT. It seems to me that he did a good job in building the DLT division but if his compensation was based on the performance of the overall company I can understand why he would move on to a more pure play.
