Surgeon suspended for using phone during operation scmp.com Wednesday, October 27, 1999 'Phone call' surgeon on hold ELLA LEE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Queen Mary Hospital surgeon accused of using a mobile phone during an operation has been suspended from duty and will appear before an investigation panel today to give his explanation, according to sources. A taxi driver said the surgeon talked on his phone about buying a car during an operation to remove a polyp from his colon. He has lodged a complaint with the hospital. The doctor will give his side of the story to the Professional Standards Committee today. Until the investigation is completed, he has been suspended from all clinical duties, sources revealed last night. Other staff present at the operation will be interviewed. Hospital chief executive Dr Vivian Wong Taam Chi-woon has said that the incident, if proven, was serious and the doctor would be penalised. Mobile phones are banned in all public hospital wards and operating theatres to avoid interference with medical equipment. During the keyhole operation conducted on May 13 this year, the doctor broke through the patient's colon wall. The patient underwent a second operation the same day for inflammation of the abdominal wall.
