DELL AND EDGIX FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE TO SPEED UP DELIVERY OF INTERNET CONTENT Agreement Encompasses Joint Marketing, Distribution and Product Development Business Editors & High-Tech Writers ROUND ROCK, Texas and NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) and Edgix Corporation, a privately held Internet content delivery company, today announced a strategic alliance to help improve the web experience of Internet users by speeding the delivery of web content. Edgix and Dell have agreed to bundle Edgix's HotMedia service with Dell's Internet caching appliance. HotMedia is a high-speed, content delivery service that accelerates Internet content by delivering it to the edges of the Internet, so that popular and rich content is only one router hop away from the end-user. In addition to the service bundle, the strategic alliance will include co-marketing, business development, and joint sales and product development activities. "The Dell and Edgix offering will help ISPs enhance their customers' Internet experience while reducing their bandwidth costs," said Gene Austin, Vice President and General Manager of Dell's Internet Server Products Group. "Edgix's patent-pending technology coupled with its compelling value proposition for ISPs will enable Dell to capitalize on new market opportunities globally. Together, Edgix and Dell plan to help lead the way to the next frontier in Internet infrastructure services." Dell's Internet caching appliance is designed to significantly enhance the speed at which web pages are accessed and viewed by keeping retrieved pages closer to the users requesting them. The superior performance of Dell's Internet caching appliance, combined with Edgix's content delivery service, will give ISPs a powerful solution to address both performance and cost issues easily. Internet congestion has become a revenue killer for e-commerce sites. Independent firms like Zona Research have concluded that current average download times can frustrate users and result in e-commerce revenue losses totaling as much as $4.35 billion within the United States.(1) "The massive congestion and slow response times experienced today are a result of the Internet not being designed for large-scale content and e-commerce distribution," added Rangu Salgame, President & CEO of Edgix. "The growth of rich media and the proliferation of broadband access further necessitate a better content delivery model. Edgix is partnering with an industry leader like Dell to provide a comprehensive content delivery solution for its customers. Edgix's customers will benefit from Dell's technological innovations and superior customer service."
