When Gold Hits Bottom

Why is International Speculator your personal key to financial success in the coming decade?
Formerly known as Crisis Investing, International Speculator is now in its 19th year of publication. Editor Doug Casey <bio.html> has made a career of finding winning speculations. In fact he picks more winners than most supposedly "conservative" stock portfolios and mutual funds but for much higher returns. He's had hundreds of 100% plus hits over the last 20 years and as much as 10,000% just last year. Its' an amazing track record <trackrecord.html>.
And for sure, Doug Casey's viewpoint and his newsletter are distinctive sometimes outrageous, but always clear, dead honest and very canny. No dreaming or dissembling. He spells out all the pros and cons for every pick so his subscribers know where they're headed and why. Here a few of his most recent opinions.
TIME FOR GOLD?
In May 1996, Casey advised getting out of natural resources, particularly mining stocks and precious metals. He saved his readers a lot of grief as the whole mining/precious metals market tumbled disastrously, but now....
"It's time to buy both gold and silver bullion (or coins) in size, and with abandon. It's also time to buy into the junior mining shares. Sure they could lose another 25%, even after the mauling they've had. But the chances are better they'll gain 500% over the next couple of years. I'll take those odds."(cont)

Hi Robert. ...." BATTLE MOUNTAIN just F'ed their shareholders. Watch the stock Slide again Today........"
I am assuming that Battle Mountain was at the Denver conference and would be aware of all the anti hedge talk
that was supposed to be going on. I also assume they would be privy to talk amongst producers that we would not hear if so why would they hedge at this time if they were not totally convinced the gold was heading down??
What do they know that we don't know.
Or maybe there completely stupid.
Seems like a lot of producers wont be in business if POG
goes up??

Battle Mountain hedged 300,000 oz of gold over next 4 years
New York--Oct 26--Battle Mountain Gold Co. said it has taken advantage of the
rising market to hedge a total of 300,000 ounces of production for delivery over
the next 4 years, or about 19,000 ounces per quarter. As well as part of its
90-day gold sales program, the firm could be required to deliver 15,000 ounces
of gold in the fourth quarter of this year at $320 an ounce. (Story .24385)

IF BMG shorts after a price rise and then covers if the price drops say, $30/oz, then I like that kind of hedging. A trading hedge strategy based on physical delivery guarantees a good forward price for their output if they get caught and lowers the effective recovery cost if successful, so they become more competitive through a bigger working capital. They have to cover though. You can't sit there holding an LT hedge. There's too much unsystematic risk.
