Thats a poor comparable- Betamax was done in by lack of distribution. CDMA now has backing of many large companies and has the ability to do data driving adoption rates. the installed base is meaningless because people get new phones every three years. someone at school was using a 3 yr old motorola phone b/c his other one was broken-other than that you never see them. it will be the same in three years with current phones. given that, it will be alot easier to get the consumer to switch.
