Were they? The world stood far less free in 1948 than 1940 thanks to communist gains. The Soviets took what Hitler wanted in Eastern Europe and then China went communist. Soon communists were successfully fomenting revolution in Africa and the Americas as well.

Faster and more direct - yes. More aggressive, I think not.
