2. MICROSOFT TARGETS WIRELESS AS NEXT BIG MARKET

Joining an already exploding field, Microsoft (MSFT) announced yesterday
that it is targeting telecommunications services as its number one
business area for the 21st century, with a special new focus on wireless
communications. The company stated that it is prepared to invest in
third-generation mobile network operators in order to ensure that mobile
data services are rolled out as soon as possible.

COMMENT: Similar to Microsoft's realization that the Internet was going
to be important in 1996 and that fixed broadband (cable, et. al.) was
going to be important in 1997, Microsoft is now realizing that
telecommunications is going to be BIG. Given its available cash to build
out networks, we expect Microsoft to put its money where its mouth is by
entering into partnerships with many existing wireless players.

Microsoft has already formed Wireless Knowledge, a joint venture with The
Bull Market Wireless Investor favorite Qualcomm (QCOM), to address the
need for mobile devices to access "collaborative applications" (meaning
other Microsoft products). Even though Microsoft's Windows CE platform is
its most lucrative potential sales area for existing Microsoft products,
Windows CE is not optimized for most wireless devices since a typical CE
configuration uses 40 MB of storage compared to only 8 MB used by
Symbian's Epoc platform. Consequently, we expect to see Microsoft develop
or buy a new operating system for mobile devices. For better or worse,
when Microsoft takes dead aim on an industry, the dynamics are certain to
change.
