SG Cowen Securities analyst Richard Chu attributed the weakness in H-P
shares to nervousness about the performance of the company's enterprise
systems business -- a sector H-P discusses as one that was faring poorly
relative to plan on Oct. 1. See full story.

"Those concerns have intensified in recent weeks," he said. "It's a business
that will most likely be down year to year. The question is whether with
weakness in that sector it's going to trigger a shortfall beyond."

In another blow to H-P shares, Merrill Lynch cut fourth-quarter earnings
estimates on the PC maker to 73 cents a share from 78 cents, citing
weakness in the company's UNIX server business and enterprise storage.
The broker also sliced fiscal 1999 and 2000 estimates
