Anandtech reviews Pentium IIIE (Coppermine) with the new FC-PGA 370 (socket) package:

anandtech.com

The flip chip packaging is pretty neat and compact, but thus far, it only works in 810e motherboards because of voltage incompatibilities with older Socket-370 motharboards. Not surprisingly, performance is hampered compared to a Pentium IIIE on a 440BX motherboard.

P.S. - This is a repost from the INTC, since all of the action seems to be here these days ...

Goutama,

<You may have to reassess your impression on Intel Mobile chip launch ;^)

AMD set to capitalise from Intel mobile embarrassment>

Yes, I do have some doubts on the laptop side too. I thought I posted about that yesterday or day before when you posted about Fujitsu laptop design win.

As I have stated many times I am not expecting much in Q4 from CuMine. Intel did this launch because they had to. Being 100MHz behind and going into holiday season was an untenable deal for a market leader - better late than never. One way to look at this would be to think if any other semiconductor company could pull off what Intel did since the original CuMine slip. Once we take that into account this launch does not look that bad.

Athlon Vs CuMine is Q1 battle and people on this thread already know where I placed my bet.

RE <<<The lack of ability of Intel to supply .18 micron Pentium IIIs to its channel dealers and distributors in volume until next year has given AMD a rare window of opportunity to sell its products.>>>

I have a hard time buying into the idea that the shortage is due to demand as opposed to manu. problems (claimed by one analyst this AM). To me a shortage doesn't fit with intc's last earnings report.

Do you think that demand is that great?

I also can't buy into the concept that everyone is replacing their desktop with a laptop. Not a major issue but do others see it that way?
