Thanks Joan, interesting. I'll tell you one thing - when I have travelled to Europe in this decade there seems to be some obvious racism at the airports with regards to security checkpoints. No kidding, the french customs just takes one look at two americans coming through and they let you go right in. When we were late for a flight once we looked in the line for any middle easterners. Since there were none, we cruised right through - no wonder there are so many political tensions over there. BTW I have a reference because I went to Latin America last year, what with the drug trafficking and all the LA/USA relationship in some ways is similar to Middle East/Europe. But in Bolivia things were very fair - everyone was searched for drugs and questioned, no exceptions.
