NITT, RE: Now I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but SSB will be compelled to buy Intel on 11/1 for any fund that promises to mirror the DOW. Could this be an attempt to beat the stock down while they buy?

Specifically regarding index funds, it is irrelevant what the price of Intel will be on 1 Nov. The Dow Index will be adjusted at whatever the price of Intel is on 1 Nov, and the funds are paid to mirror this price. The index funds won't take the risk of buying much Intel early. There will be a lot of volume near the close on the 1st as the index funds do their best to buy all their Intel as close to the closing price as possible. (I'm assuming here that the addition is at the close on the 1st.)
