The days of Intel's unchallenged influence to push its proprietary standards for its own gain, competitive advantages, and especially to thwart the competition is slowly diminishing day by day. Thanks to AMD, Compaq and Via, Intel's carefully nurtured rock solid control over the PC infrastructure is gradually crumbling. They are facing increased competition/challenges in every segment of their business. Any decision on their part to extend X86 to 64bit would be too late to do any major damage to AMD.
