Well, I do believe there are some schools with minor variations, but basically, Zen is analogous to the Pyrrhonic skeptic school in Hellenistic times. The aim of meditating on koans is to attain a state of perfect mental equipoise, an indifference to "metaphysical truth", to stop the ceaseless questioning of the intellect. That is why one Zen master summed up the doctrine thus: "Eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired", and another said, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him".......
