Because they (MSFT) are in a clear danger of loosing their dominance in the PC OS world to Linus or linux, redhat, top hat, red herring or the likes.

It's often been reported that the untimely death of Microsoft was close at hand. I wouldn't count on it. While I agree that MSFT is in a much more precarious position these days due to the DoJ, etc. They usually find a way to overcome; mainly by out-waiting, out-spending their competition.

Regarding Linux, John C. Dvork's editorial in Oct. 5, 1999 PC Magazine (p. 81) is a good opinion of where Linux is and where it's likely to go. Linux in its present form is NOT a threat to MSFT.

MSFT's next lock-in market will be speech recognition and voice technology. Read their PR's for the past couple of weeks. There is nothing in their news about biometrics that I have found.
