I don't see the inevitability that Intel will ship 256 node servers any time soon, nor do I see the inevitability if they _do_ ship such a thing that it will perform.

Maybe he meant "256 NERD servers" which is how many admins and engineers it takes to keep microsoft.com on-line. <g>

Forget 256 - focus on 4 and 8 way; that's where they will fly. The bulk of the mid-server market is 2-8 way machines. An 8-way 700MHZ PIII box with 512M RAM, 100GB RAID could one day cost as little as...

8 CPU * $1000 = 8000 (based on $849/cpu large quantities)
512M RAM = 800
100 GB RAID = 5000
Mboard + case = 1000
Net card(s) = 300
Backup = 1000
UPS = 1000
====================
~18,000.00 + tax = < $24,000.00 !

Now what does an 8-way Sun box cost ?
