I though outfits like Mips made these gaming chips and they cost under $10 and run graphics extremely well. Why use an Athlon...seems like a waste...

(Disclaimer: I know nothing of whether the X-Box even exists, much less what any plans for it would be.)

Most consoles do use inexpensive RISC chips. For instance, the new Sega Dreamcast (got one, very cool) uses a Hitachi SH-4 chip.

If Microsoft were to enter this market, I would think that leveraging the existing installed base of Windows games would have to be part of the strategy. Thus an x86 processor such as the Athlon...
