I can see the tankers on the smooth, German engineered ride on the way down to the battlefield. And the sheer terror in their eyes.

Did we have anything in 1945 that could have prevented the 2 ton chunk of steel from becoming a comet? Even if you dropped the tankers seperately, it would only make a big hole.

I agree, it is a bit far sighted for the day. Do you have any idea how many lives would have been saved if the landing transports at Normandy had carried smoke launchers?

thanks

yes the west did put up a huge tactical air wing but it is my suspicion is that if they had devoted more of their air resources toward tactical air they could have had geometrical results. Tactical air is really just highly mobile artillery and you can never have too much artillery.

interesting point re development of a giant air transport. The Germans actually did develop a giant transport, I believe Messerschmidt but I can't remember the number, but didn't go into mass production. Not to open another can of worms but in just the last few days I was reading an article with the thesis that paratroop warfare has been a failure. The main arguement was that the troops come in disorganized and too lightly armed. That even the missions that accomplished their goal, such as Crete, carried to high a cost in highly trained personnel to make it an effect tactic. That the only appropriate role for paratroops is in a Commando role. Interesting article.
