Though it is a crude indicator, if institutions increase the holdings of a particular stock by 5 - 10 % or more, they see value in it for price appreciation - though it is hard to tell by how much ? - neverthless in an upcoming bull market cycle it can be viewed as a positive for the stock. On the same tone a decraese in holdings doesn't necessarily mean that the future of the stock is bleak - the institution may prefer instant liquidity than holding any stock. It is better to use it as a tool alongside other issues like P/E, P/S ratio, EPS growth rate etc.
