U.S. TRADING SUMMARY: Stocks were mixed at midday Wednesday as
strong corporate profits were largely ignored by a Wall Street
more concerned about a potential hike in interest rates. ''You
have a lot of people marking time ahead of tomorrow's economic
data,'' said Charles Payne, the head analyst at Wall Street
Strategies, an independent market research firm. ''There's a ton
of money waiting to come into this market if we get the right
signal.''
Nervous about a potential interest-rate hike from the
Federal Reserve on Nov. 16, Wall Street was anxious for the
Thursday release of the Employment Cost Index and the
third-quarter gross domestic product data.
