thanks. how does the profile of the average short seller vs. the average long buyer compare. are the shorts as a rule, the "big boys" while the longs tend to be more small investors, or is there no way to tell?

Shorts are only taking a huge risk if they fail to buy protective calls. On the other hand, the longs can offset their risk of owning the stock by buying puts. IMHO, at least from what I currently understand, I don't see either a short or long taking a larger risk, unless one protects himself and the other does not.
