taxpayers have until 12/31/99 to change Roth contributions OR conversions for 1998 back to traditional IRAs. Then you'll have until 4/15/2002 to file form 1040X to show that this recharacterization was done prior to 1/1/2000.

IRS is sending out letters to 20,000 taxpayers who have obvious problems - from just a casual look-see of their filed form 1040.
