Depression must be genetically dominant -- for almost everyone is depressed from time to time. If all of our synapses were soaked in serotonin, we would always be the happy, self-contained, self-assured people that we want to be. We would also be unbearable.

Come to me my melancholy baby,
Cuddle up and don't be shy ...

The ability to cheer up a beautiful melancholy woman -- to see a sad -eyed lady of the lowlands brighten up when she sees you -- ah, there is joy. By the way, I wasn't talking about mates -- but a woman.

The ability of a person to romanticise life's events -- to recollect and enjoy sex in tranquillity -- which at least to a nihilist who believes that both joy and pain are mere mental states that we can shape to our needs -- is one key to happiness.

I hope Jack and Marilyn had that ability. I have.

Strange. I always thought I was a cynic, not a romantic or a sentimentalist. You are the only person who has characterized me thus. Live and learn, I guess.
