Winstar Offering Data Services in Top 60 U.S. Markets -- Plans to Deploy Data Centers in All Its Central Offices NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OCT. 28, 1999--WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ: WCII) today announced that it is offering data and Internet services in the top 60 U.S. markets, one year ahead of schedule. The company also announced plans to construct data centers in every Winstar central office across the country. Critical Milestones The offering of data services in each of its markets and the deployment of regional data centers are critical milestones in Winstar's strategy to drive traffic onto its network and generate greater gross margins through enhanced service offerings. The company has assembled a unique set of assets that collectively enable the company to provide a complete set of integrated data and Internet services to customers in more than 60 U.S. markets. The company's assets include: -- the largest holdings of broadband fixed wireless spectrum in North America; -- a high-speed, high-capacity fixed wireless broadband network; -- intra-city fiber rings in major metropolitan markets; -- a long-haul fiber network; -- a Tier 1 Internet and data backbone; and -- state-of-the-art data centers. "Customer demand for data services has grown exponentially," said William J. Rouhana, Jr., Winstar's chairman and chief executive officer. "By rolling out our data services to the top 60 markets one year ahead of our original schedule, using our wireless fiber network to deliver these services and deploying data centers at our central offices, Winstar will realize significant cost savings and revenue opportunities in the fourth quarter and into 2000." Winstar's Internet and data services include high-speed Internet access and WAN services; Web consulting and outsourcing, including Web site hosting, design and e-commerce solutions; and LAN/WAN and systems integration. These services are available to small and medium businesses as well as for larger, broadband-intensive users. Network Breadth and Depth Winstar operates one of the most widely available broadband networks in the country. Through its agreements with Metromedia Fiber and Williams Communications, Winstar has acquired more than 16,000 long-haul route miles of fiber and nearly 6,000 intracity route miles of fiber that are already being delivered. In addition, the company has deployed more than 100 data switches across the nation. The combination of fixed wireless broadband technology and local and long haul fiber, allows Winstar - through its unique "national-local" network - to route traffic at a local level across the country, improving network efficiency, speed and quality of service. Distributed Data Centers The company's new regional data centers will be collocated within Winstar's nationally deployed central offices. The centers will be connected to one another via the company's national fiber backbone network and to Winstar Wireless FiberSM customers with local loop capabilities. As a result of Winstar's expanded local presence and regionally distributed hosting centers, Web content, application and e-commerce hosting customers will benefit from unsurpassed reliability, performance and convenience. In addition to the new regional hosting centers, Winstar currently operates three "super centers" in three major markets: Tysons Corner, VA; Seattle, WA; and Boston, MA. The company is planning additional large-scale centers in San Francisco and New York City. These facilities, which will be as large as 80,000 square feet, serve as anchors for the smaller regional centers. "By deploying data centers within our central offices, Winstar will be uniquely positioned within the hosting marketplace," added Rouhana. "We intend to use our regional data centers as distribution nodes to implement national Internet video streaming and Web content distribution solutions for our hosting customers. These types of services have high margins and drive significant traffic across our local and backbone network." ---------------- Go baby go.
