athlon is still a niche player...dell and gateway customers will never see it. thought i better explain the niche part. rambus detractors like to talk about amd and athlon. let's take a quick look at them. we hear a lot about amd and athlon here, but probably not for much longer. amd has about $600 million in cash. they lost about $100 million last q. you would think they have 6q's before going under right? wrong! according to this news clip from earlier this month amd is selling their profitable divisions. amd folks will brag about the new dresden mfr facility coming on line...it cost $2 billion. with my last house, payments began when construction was complete. wonder how they are going to pay for it? they are burning up cash reserves now. looks like the losses will accelerate. just for contrast...intel earned nearly $1.5 billion on $7.3 billion in sales last quarter. intel's "earnings" were 2 1/2 times amd's "sales". intel has about $10 billion cash on hand. clicking on a person's name brings you to their personal profile. i like to look at a person's favorite stocks...sometimes, i use that to decide how much investment advice i want to take from that person. many who always see the glass 1/2 empty, list cpq and/or amd. check it out. with those as their favorite tech stocks...i understand the attitude. clip.....In the most recent quarter, AMD had revenues of $662 million, down 3 percent from the $686 million from the like quarter a year before. The company's net loss was $106 million. The company attributed its stronger-than-expected results to strong sales of its high-end--and higher profit margin--Athlon processor, as well 28 percent growth in its flash memory products from the quarter. In order to break even in the current quarter, AMD will have to achieve revenues of about $850 million, the company said, a hope that isn't likely, even with an expected surge in holiday sales. "This is a very tough goal," said AMD chief executive Jerry Sanders in a conference call today. "In the face of uncertainty [from Taiwan earthquake effects], it remains just that--a goal." In the last quarter, AMD earned $295 million from PC processor sales, Sanders said. would sell its communications and networking chip business, which has been profitable for many quarters. Sanders declined to state how much the company expected to receive for the division, maybe if sanders knew the difference between sales/revenues and earnings, he wouldn't spend so much money. unclewest
