In the regular season, he's a decent manager when he has a stacked team, because he doesn't rock the boat with all that strategy stuff. Then, when he gets into a playoff series with a good opponent, he freaks out and starts making all kind of moves that don't make sense and don't gibe with his normal approach. Exhibit A: using John Rocker in a non-save situation three times in the postseason after not doing that all year. Not pulling Glavine in Games 3 was perhaps the dumbest move in baseball history. Cox said before the game that he was only hoping for 7 innings from Glavine. Glavine had the flu, limiting his stamina. The Yankees had started to hit him in the previous time around the batting order, and the top of the order was due up. It was a no-brainer. Cox was a terrible manager for the Braves in the late '70s, for the Jays in the late '80s, and for the Braves again in the '90s.
