That would send gold through the roof and people would hoard coins. Luckily everything under $5 up here in Canada is not a bill.
It would also result in capital flows going to countries where this was not done.

Well, THAT was a great Spooooky Halloween tale there, Alex. Nice find.

I can just see how that would work. One gives money to their Home Depot check-out clerk who runs it through a "reader" and then demands more cash from you than the cash register says you owe, because you got paid "stale" bills by your best buddies in Friday night's card game when you mopped up with a Royal Flush. Or how about the local Bingo pot? Babysitters will get ripped off also, not to mention tipping maitre'd and waiting staff, bellhops, maids, paperboy, etc.
