Delphi Acquires 100 Percent Interest in Baicheng Joint Venture

SHANGHAI, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH - news) today announced it has acquired 100 percent interest in its joint venture with Baicheng Automobile Wire Factory.

Consisting of two manufacturing facilities in northern China, Delphi Packard Electric Baicheng Co. Ltd. was formed in 1994, with Delphi as the majority partner. Prior to this announcement Delphi owned 53 percent of the operation.

''Acquiring 100 percent interest in our Baicheng joint venture gives Delphi more flexibility in the operation and strengthens our manufacturing footprint in the Asia Pacific region,'' said Nancy Gougarty, managing director, Delphi Packard Electric China. ''Delphi continues to pursue strategic investment opportunities in China, as projections for continued growth in the region's automotive industry remain strong.''

Delphi Packard Electric Baicheng manufactures automotive cable for Delphi's China facilities here, Changchun and Guangzhou, as well as for Delphi's Indonesia plant and HaFei, a leading minivan manufacturer in China. It also supplies wiring harnesses for Audi and Jetta automobiles manufactured for domestic sale by the First Auto Works-Volkswagen (FAW-VW) joint venture, and produces ignition cable for Mitsubishi and Fuji Heavy Industry in Japan.

''This investment bolsters Delphi's relationship with global customer FAW-VW by giving them direct access to Delphi's worldwide engineering and lean manufacturing expertise,'' Gougarty said. Delphi Eyes Thailand for New Plant

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - The world's biggest auto parts manufacturer, Delphi Automotive Systems Corp (NYSE:DPH - news)., is holding preliminary discussions with the Thai Board of Investment on establishing a plant in Thailand, near new facilities set up by General Motors and Ford.

Officials representing Delphi and the Thai board last week confirmed, on condition of anonymity, reports in Thai newspapers that a few rounds of talks have been held, but no final decision has been made.

Automakers GM, Ford and BMW have or are in the process of setting up plants on Thailand's eastern seaboard, joining Japanese firms long established here.

General Motors, which unveiled plans in 1996 to launch a plant producing 100,000 new vehicles a year, scaled back plans after the Asian economic crisis struck. GM now plans to start producing Zafira minivans by next May, with initial production of 40,000 vehicles a year.

Ford has been producing Ranger pickup trucks in its joint-venture plant with Mazda since 1998 and plans to market locally produced Laser sedans next year to compete with popular Japanese models.

Delphi, based in Troy, Mich., was spun off by General Motors in May with an eye to allowing the company - the 36th largest manufacturing firm in the United States - more flexibility in reaching deals with other automakers.

Recently announced third-quarter sales of $6.9 billion were up 18 percent over a year ago. Sales to customers other than GM totaled $1.7 billion, a 16 percent increase.

DAYTON, Ohio, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- MagneRide(TM), the acclaimed high- performance semi-active suspension control system developed by Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH - news), has been selected as one of the 100 ''Best of What's New'' technical achievements of 1999 by POPULAR SCIENCE magazine.

MagneRide is an advanced variable damping suspension system. It uses a magnetically controlled damping fluid to provide world-class ride and handling performance in a lightning-fast, extremely quiet and cost-effective package.

The MagneRide system, introduced in Europe earlier this fall, has already been recognized by an association of 30 leading French automotive journalists with their ''Grand Prix Internationaux de la Creation Technique'' (Grand Prize for New International Technology).

With MagneRide, suspension damping is controlled by an on-board computer that signals an electro-magnet in the damper piston to change the flow properties of the magneto-rheological damping fluid and resultant damping forces up to 1,000 times per second. This allows the system to respond rapidly to a wide range of road and driving conditions. These damping forces provide improved vehicle interior isolation and ride smoothness, which also reduces transmission of high-frequency road noise, resulting in a quieter ride.

MagneRide is competitive with currently available valve-based real-time damping systems. It has been demonstrated on a variety of vehicles, ranging from high-performance sport cars to sport/utility and passenger vehicles.
