freeus, short term entry points are beyond the pale of this
group of Gorilla hunters. Tekboy is currently running an
experiment on his acquisition "system" (code name Catfish),
but since he hasn't discussed it lately, it's a good bet
that it isn't working out all that well.

The overall approach here is to find a Gorilla, and
concentrate resources in it. Since Gorillas have incredibly
long periods of incredible appreciation, the entry point is
more a matter of bragging rights than substance.

There are some good crystal balls available at the Ask
Vendit thread, or you can check with Jim Willie/JC on the
Q thread. For my money, gmst is a buy right now, even
though it might be less expensive later.

Good luck,
uf

Q: Have you calculated how much you would have made with JDSU if you had not bought and sold? Would your commissions bought another share or two? Did you find yourself leaving money on the table, selling, then buying back in slightly higher?

IMO, what you're doing there is timing the market...and that doesn't work consistently unless your coins have two heads. We should be buying issues because of 1) solid present fundamentals, 2) rising prospects. If those conditions remain present, then you should be buying more.

As to GMST, I feel conditions 1 and 2 exist. It is now 100% of my Roth, and unless things change by January for the worse (highly doubtful), I will buy more regardless of the price. I'm thinking about 10 years hence, not tomorrow.

To Freeus Re JDSU (I'll let others tackle GMST)

JDSU has had a huge run-up prior to tonight's earnings announcement (.29/share, four cents above consensus, one below whisper number), and could quite easily drop significantly due to profit-taking. On the other hand, the report was generally very good, and the company's future prospects look very bright indeed. So there's no reason to expect the stock to drop down hugely or stay down long. My own advice would be that while you might want to consider shopping a bit for a good short-term entry point once you've decided to buy, trying to time it in a larger sense would probably be a mistake (unless you're real good or real lucky).

BTW, this post from the Fool's chief JDSU guru has some nice links for those interested in the King of optoelectronic components:
