Economic conditions now called similar to 1929
NEW YORK (AP) -- The economy was on a tear.

Americans, earning more than they ever had before, filled their homes with the latest gadgets and machines. People stopped socking away money in savings accounts, betting instead that they could multiply their gains in the stock market. Companies that capitalized on the latest technology saw their stock prices quadruple in a single year.

If this sounds familiar, it's not surprising -- the same economic conditions apply today. But the year was 1929, the economy was on its way to a devastating reversal of fortune and on Oct. 29, the stock market collapsed, launching the Great Depression and creating a legacy that haunted Americans for decades.
