On the other hand, it's hard to see any legs remaining under the idea of multi-platform Solaris. Who now will sell Solaris on Merced, which Sun just nonetheless press-tidigitated? Maybe this is a good thing in terms of focus & execution for SUNW. Maybe a bad thing in terms of Solaris choices for big customers.

I think you're right, and it has everything to do with IA64's disappearance from the radar. This is ALL good for Sparc, Solaris and Sun. I think we're going to start seeing actual computer companies adopting Solaris/Sparc core. x86 Solaris is really small potatoes in the overall scheme of things (installed base and otherwise), especially with a pervasive Linux in the world.

Anyway, cash registers have IP addresses now.
