I just got my Epson 850Z digital camera today. This thing is in great demand (backordered everywhere) and I finally found a place with it in-stock and had it FedExed. eCost is selling it for a bit more $670 (plus they charge a "handling fee" yeah...right!...total cost $697) than some of the other discount resellers, but at least I'm not waiting anymore.

Anyway, the first thing I did upon unpacking the camera was to accidentally eject the CompactFlash card (while standing up) onto the hard wood floor. No damage. Both the Epson 8MB and my Sandisk 48MB CF cards formatted in the camera in a split-second and work very well.

However this little episode gives me even more concern about mechanical storage for portable devices like the IBM Microdrive and Iomega Bomb! I don't think either would have fared as well as my CF cards (I have the 48MB Sandisk card in my pants pocket right now, and have no concern that it will be harmed). Bomb! disks are extremely fragile (according to Iomega) and IBM's Microdrive is just another costly accident waiting to happen.

The portable realm has wisely chosen to ignore Bomb! and other mechanical devices for storage. Now I have seen why first-hand.
