To All on Y2K,

I'd like to give you my view on Y2K. I am a computer consultant that is working on Y2K right now. In fact, five minutes before I started typing this I was making changes to a critical system that is still "not" Y2K compliant.

Any claims that there will be no serious failures are totally irresponsible. So are any claims that major disruptions are inevitable.

The fact of the matter is, major efforts are being made to ensure that there are no problems, but no one (and I mean no one) has a firm grip on exactly what may or may not be missed despite the testing that is being done. It is an exceedingly tedious and complex task involving an enormous amount of work. Some things WILL be missed. There are also external considerations for many businesses. Even if they are compliant, their business partners may not be.

Do not accept the hype in either direction. No one knows exactly. The US is in much better shape than most. That's all we know.
