I am very gratified by your comments, and found your take on the major transition of the century interesting, and quite arguable. However, I am afraid that I must reveal myself to be a fink: I think imperialism was largely a good thing, and that although the goal of self- determination is proper, the empires were cast off much to soon. How does the developed world help the rest, except through education and investment? But how can the elementary civil, legal, and economic infrastructure be installed to get down to business, except through colonial administration? I think that the degree to which the United States remains a "hegemon" (and that degree is quite exaggerated, and depends on maintaining goodwill with many actors), the world is better off. We have maintained the international system in a manner that benefits many for a long time.....
