FOUR years after the death of biscuit baron Rajan Pillai and a vertical split in the family business, the K Janardhanan Pillai (KJP) group is making a comeback. The return is being spearheaded by Rajan Pillai's younger brother J Rajmohan Pillai who has set up the Beta group.

The companies in Thailand and Australia in which both Rajan and Rajmohan Pillai had equity have been transferred to Rajan Pillai's widow Gopika Neena Pillai. She has taken charge of the Bangkok-based Thai Agri Foods and the Wildman River Plantations in Darwin, Australia.

After Rajan Pillai's untimely demise in Tihar Jail, the KJP group went through a complete restructuring with four of the KJP group companies going to Rajmohan Pillai's cousins.

Rajmohan Pillai's Beta group will operate through Beta (P) Ltd in India and will have Beta Brands BV in Holland acting as the holding company. Rajmohan Pillai told The Economic Times that Beta (P) Ltd was targeting Rs 66-crore turnover in '99-2000, its first year of operations. Approximately Rs 30 crore of the current year's turnover is expected to be earned by value addition and a little over Rs 2 crore is targeted to be earned by its Kochi-based container freight division. The Beta group will concentrate on the erstwhile KJP group's core strength of commodity trading, processing, and food businesses, with dry fruits and nuts being its chief focus. ..(ET-10/29/99)
