Edwarda, perhaps we can start a Mann Fan Club. :-) If I had to rank my favorites, I might actually put "The Magic Mountain" at the top. (My only criticism of that one is that the verbal duels -- not the real one -- between Naptha and Settembrini go on for too long.) As for the short stories (masterful all), I have a weakness for "Disorder and Early Sorrow." Perfection. And then there are the little minor masterpieces. Did you ever read "The Holy Sinner"? Wonderful, wonderful! But "Joseph and his Brothers" kind of bombed out, I think. Joan
