Hi Nancy,
I'm glad that you pointed out that "Jesus is the very Word of God".

Some people may not realize that when John is speaking about the "Word", the "Word" is in fact Jesus. If you are aware of this, John 1 makes a lot more sense.

In verse 4, "His" life is the light of men.

In verse 5, I understand it to mean that The darkness will never overcome, or put out the light.

This gives us great hope to carry on. The light of men, Jesus, will never be put out by the darkness. No matter how bleak the world looks, we can have strength and peace in this hope.

Colleen

Nancy Promise me that when you get to verse 12 and 13 that you treat them as a single thought and not separate ideas or concepts.

Nancy,
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God.
:2 The same was in the beginning with God. Also :3,:4 and :5

"Then God said,'Let there be light,'and there was light." I believe that too many people read that quote as, only, meaning that the planet's star was created as it's Sun to provide the light and warmth necessary to support the life forms that God was about to create. To me, there is a second light, much more important to mankind that "...was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This light has been, and will always be, the major factor in the lives of men(always to include women). "In him was life, and the life
was the light of men." Without this light, nothing could,or can, exist. This light is a beacon to all mankind.

To digress a bit. I feel(because it happened to me) that when a person gives his soul into the loving, and redeeming, hands of Jesus Christ, a glow of light and warmth, through the surrendered soul, from the beacon of God, surrounds that person with a feeling of well being that can not be described, even, by the greatest thinkers, philosophers,or orators that have ever lived.

"...and the darkness comprehended it not." We see the results of this all around us in these times. Too many people are "having their fun" revelling in the pleasures of sin and opulence that they fear they will know no pleasure if they see, and comprehend, the light offered to them. They do knot know the, infinite, pleasures that are known to those that see, and follow the light.

Also, from the accounts of those who have had a "near death" experience, we hear of "the light at the end of the tunnel". I believe that this is the beacon of light from God to lead us home, at last. I know that it will not be long before I see that light, and because of what it will lead me to, I do not fear death.

I have been sick in bed for a day and a half, and have only read up to post #1318. I have a lot of catching up to do. Sorry I was so late in responding to you.
