Osprey:
On a vertical well that was drilled over balanced they generally run the casing to the bottom of the hole. Then they will shoot off a perforating gun to blow holes through the casing, well into the rock of the production zone. Drilling mud would have sealed off this zone to prevent gas from entering the well bore. After this is done they will run in production tubing to bring the well on stream and gas to surface.
