GaryS, re: "Why not make the RAM non-volatile?" Your response was not entirely accurate. DRAM power requirements are directly related to their operating frequency and they often provide a "hold" state where the power draw is next to nothing.

Since your typical flash card speed is closer to microseconds than nanoseconds, DRAM could easily do the job assigned to flash. In fact, more than one company has attempted to market credit cards with DRAM and built-in batteries. The problem is that institutions are uncomfortable with devices with a defined life ... even if it is 5 or 10 years.

Since flash memory is likely to outlive most anyone's career path, it's automatically a better choice for boardroom-level decisions.
