Obewon, think about it! what would the resolution of a display be at 4x magnification? 8x...... obviously this is the reason. I asked the same question at the demo.

The normal eye resolves about 1 minute of arc, so you need 60 pixels for each degree of the field of view. That's why when you looked at the image on the BCBL you could see every pixel --- there was space between them since the resolution was 1024x1280 and the field of view was I think about 30 degrees (meaning full resolution required 1800 pixels across).
A really good image, with subtle colors and a wide ranging gray scale requires significantly more pixels to create than simply the number of pixels that the eye can resolve. So to have a really good image and to accommodate a larger field of view will require much higher levels of resolution. If I remember correctly, Tom Lippert told me that personal IMAX would require a 10,000 pixel by ?? pixel matrix. Digital theatre is around 3840x2160 according to the annual report for 1997.

Perhaps with the 20/10 vision that the VISX device promises the pilot of the future will be able to use that greater resolution.
