OT hoard cash for a long period and then buy on a dip, I have a short history at successful investing, but the October (more truly Sept->Nov) dips have been the one thing I have been able to predict and exploit. Maybe it's one of those coincidences like if the Yankees win the series the market will go up, or the market tracks hemlines, kind of things. Still I've made most of my trading profits (as opposed to stocks I just hold and hold) by selling everything that doesn't look golden by August (at least enough to have full margin powers) and then buying dips maybe in Sept but usually in October). Buy a good stock on a terrible day in October and you have a double two out of three times by February. I guess that means managing cash for half the year, which is a long time in the internet age, but it seems like the rest of the year is just devoted to determining what is a strong stock for the Oct-Feb game. (I don't belive my own game enough to play with more than 25% of my money, the rest I hold). This year my game plan was to stay fully invested and then use the 50% margin power in this period. I didn't find it quite as successfull since I have a natural tendancy to avoid using the margin and have passed up several opportunities that turned out good and that I would have likely pursued with cash. At any rate, I don't want to suggest you can time the market, especially if you have a particular item in mind, but I have been very lucky if I just look for opportunity in the fall with a fairly wide range of royalty or gorillas as targets. The result? If your specified window of time is Oct (give or take a few weeks) and/or secondarily the clean out period before Oct. (roughly August) then finding a good entry point for good companies does seem doable. TP ( Disclaimer : I have yet to reach a half-dozen years on this scheme but it hasn't failed me yet) -Edit- Sorry this has little to do with this thread and I got carried away forgetting what thread I was reading. - If there is any relevance then I may claim this is a method I use to delete those companies that are monkeys and try to return the focus to better stocks in the course of the year. Next time I will pick a wine I enjoy less when reading this thread. - TP
