A casual observation and not sure I can back it up. It seems to me opening gap plays are more dependable when the whole market isn't being ramped one way or the other at open.

Starting last year with the overnight Asian crisis, you'd see incredible fakeout rallies in Globex that tried to sucker folks into the American markets for the open, only to die. Many stocks with no news would get lifted by the ramp, only to get slammed (gap filled fast).

When there is no big news, at least stocks act more on their own merits or news.
