Charles-I believe that the better managers are aware that too much volatility and the resulting tax burden on their taxable investors can cause those investors to go elsewhere. It has certainly been getting more attention in the press as this bull market gets longer in the tooth and more investors are putting new money in at higher levels. It isn't a whole lot of fun to buy xyz fund in Sept. and own a 90% value at year end and get a tax statement that your fund had 4% capital gains which have generated tax for you since they were of course distributed in December.
