Yes, but there are better and worse cases. To take an example, it is likely that Britain would have been forced to sue for peace had it not been for lend- lease. It is not very plausible, however, that Hitler would have confined his ambitions to the East if Britain and France just stayed out of the invasion of Poland. For one thing, he was determined to settle scores with France (when he imposed an armistice, he made sure it was signed at Versailles, and did a little jig); for another, Britain was the major imperial power, and only by forcing Britain to come to terms could Germany achieve its ambitions to expand as an imperial power. Since this is crucial to Buchanan's thesis, it is a big problem.....
