Any ideas and reasons for selling/keeping Jan calls for a couple more months?

If it were me, I'd be inclined to take the profit on a good move up -- maybe monday. It's a crap shoot though. We might, as you say, get good earnings, and go up further.

That's one of the problems I find with short term options. I rarely do them any more. If I do, it's with only minor dollars. The problem is that you have to be right in a short period of time -- right on QCOM and right on the overall market. Pretty tough to do -- and stressful. It also gets you into situations like this. Do you take a reasonable gain or do you take a chance and hold until closer to expiration? These days I generally put about 85% of my money in shares and try to time shorter term moves with longer term options. If I were trying to time the next couple of months, I might do it with Jan 2001 calls. You don't have the potential to make the same $$$, but if your timing is wrong, you just wait it out. Also, nothing wrong with sitting on some cash and waiting for one of those gut wrenching dips we get several times a year.

<<But earnings is next week and often it is better not to hold through earnings. Thats a con.
But look at jdsu...they went UP substantially after earnings.>>

IMO, earnings announcement is important only to the extent they don't disappoint and we know that will not happen. What will drive the stock up after the announcement will have more to do with any positive statements coming out of the CC. I expect that Q management will as usual, have a very positive spin on the short and long term future. I am looking for a small dip Tues. and Wed. followed by increased price targets (once the analysts take two days to call their mothers so they can understand what they heard) and a steady run up to $270.00 prior to split announcement.
