B: Pervasive Software Outlines Strategic Initiatives for Growth in the Emerging
Market for E-Business Applications in the Post-PC Era

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct 29, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Pervasive Software(R)
Inc. (Nasdaq:PVSW) today outlined its "Applications Everywhere"
strategy designed to further capitalize on growth opportunities in the
market for e-business applications in the post-PC era of wireless Web
computing. Pervasive is a leading provider of software solutions that
give developers the freedom to create applications for everyone,
everywhere.

Pervasive is planning significant incremental investments over the next
four quarters as it launches four strategic initiatives:

--Launch the e-business alliance program designed to unite Web
application developers with Web integrators to accelerate and expand
the deployment of major e-business applications to global 2000
companies. This launch includes additional lead generation programs to
recruit new Web developers and integrators into the alliance.

--Establish a telemarketing call center to aggressively recruit Web
application developers and provide sales and technical assistance to
accelerate the development cycle of new e-business applications.

--Launch a major brand awareness campaign designed to establish
Pervasive as a preferred choice for e-business solutions in the post-PC
era of wireless Web computing.

--Accelerate delivery of new features in Tango 2000(TM) and
Pervasive.SQL 2000(TM) to support deployment of major e-business
applications across all popular clients and servers, including the
emerging world of mobile or wireless handheld devices. For example,
Pervasive recently announced availability of the Pervasive.SQL 2000
database for handheld devices, such as 3Com's Palm Pilot and devices
based on Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. In addition,
Pervasive has expanded support for corporate servers to include
availability of Pervasive.SQL 2000 and Tango 2000 for Solaris and
Linux. Slated for next year, Pervasive plans to deliver the first-ever
Tango "adaptive server" integrated with the Pervasive.SQL database
server, designed to revolutionize Web application deployment by
enabling Tango applications to be deployed on smart handheld devices,
Java application servers and Microsoft ASP servers.

"As we continue to grow and evolve our business, we recognize the
opportunity to be the choice vendor of Web infrastructure products for
e-business applications in the post-PC era," said Ron Harris, president
and CEO of Pervasive Software. "We believe that the time is now to
significantly increase our investments in order to capture a leadership
position in this explosive market. This is the right thing to do for
our customers, our partners and our shareholders."

Since Pervasive joined forces with EveryWare Development Inc. and
acquired Tango nearly a year ago, the company has steadily expanded its
market presence beyond embedded databases and into the much larger
market for Web infrastructure products. According to International Data
Corporation (IDC), a market research firm, the Web application server
market alone will exceed $2 billion by 2003. IDC also estimates that
the worldwide market for smart handheld devices is expected to exceed
22 million units by 2001. Moreover, more than 80 percent of these
devices will be Web enabled. Each device represents a platform beyond
the desktop for remotely accessing and locally hosting e-business
applications. With the acquisition of Tango and the continuing
expansion of support for new platforms beyond the desktop, Pervasive is
furthering its objective to become a major force in the Web
infrastructure space by driving e-business applications across all
popular client and server platforms, including emerging "thin clients"
and "thin servers" in the wireless Web market.

"The opportunity for growth in this market is enormous, and there is
currently no recognized leader," said Harris. "To succeed in this new
market, vendors must quickly establish themselves in terms of
innovative, enabling technology, strong brand recognition and new
customer acquisition. And that's exactly what we intend to do."
