Buffett did not create BRKB in order to establish a broader base of ownership--he did it to head off a "Berkshire mutual fund" that was being formed to provide "bite-sized shares" of BRK. Berkshire's extreme price brought up to illustrate that a stock can go places without ever splitting--perhaps not recommended in the real world, and perhaps I should have gone to some lengths to show I am not a "no-split purist" in the Buffett sense--again, BRK was an illustration. As for causal relationship between volatility and float in the case of QCOM--haven't seen the QED proof yet, just speculation, IMHO.
Cheers, MM

Unc,

You hit it on the head. It's all in the float and it must be a stock that people crave. One big reason that the splits no longer help Dell and it is beginning to hurt AOL. I am stunned people do not realize this. I guess I must be out of touch, man oh man! One day it will affect the big Q but not now.

V.

< Don't you see the causal relationship between Q's volatility and its small float? >

I see several factors behind its volatility
- small number of outstanding shares
- small float
- large proportion of float in short positions
- 10fold rise in price since Christmas
- 10fold rise in earnings since early FY98
- huge disparity of opinion regarding "inevitability" of CDMA worldwide adoption by experts
- ignorance of fund managers in "seeing" the wireless future
- ignorance of imminent wireless internet phenomenon
- ignorance of imminent handheld PC explosion
- apparent conflict of interest between handsets and chipsets
- ignorant fears of component shortages

no one factor takes all or 95% of the responsibility
we see fits & starts for new visions of the future
